THE PROJECT
To enhance the current urgent care facilities and expand their overall capabilities, Gilling Dod was tasked with designing a new two-story extension and renovating York's existing Emergency Department at a cost of £18m.
OUR APPROACH
The proposed accommodation looks to deliver an eight-bed resuscitation area, twelve new assessment and treatment cubicles, a dedicated Paediatric area and much improved waiting facilities directed towards improving the overall patient experience. In addition, there is a High Consequence Infectious Disease cubicle served by a point of care testing laboratory that provides facilities not currently available to the immediate locality of York.
WHAT WE DID
As with most current healthcare projects, the proposed extension has had to be arranged around a live, busy clinical environment. This has been particularly amplified during the Covid pandemic. Key to resolving this was strategic planning with all stakeholders to ensure that enabling works could be prioritised to enable maintenance of service with minimal disruption.
“The environment for care is much better and we are hoping to reduce the time patients must wait – as well as improving the quality and timeliness of urgent treatment. It will also help our partners in the ambulance service by reducing the time taken for them to transfer patients to us and get back on the road. Patients should notice being cared for more quickly, more expertly, and in better facilities.”
“..I’m certain that these improvements will make an enormous difference to both patients and staff alike.”
