THE PROJECT
Our main design driver was to deliver a spacious, high-quality facility for patients and a much-improved working environment for staff. All Critical Care Unit patients are cared for in individual bays, designed to improve patient wellbeing and rehabilitation.
OUR APPROACH
After many years providing care to critically ill patients, the existing department no longer complied with modern standards and was in need of updating. The new unit provides improved bed spaces, in line with the recommended percentage of single rooms and isolation bays required as part of HBN 04-02.
WHAT WE DID
The new unit puts patient care and experience front and centre and has been shaped and developed taking into consideration the thoughts and feedback of those patients and families who had previously been in the HDU and ITU wards. One example has been the dedicated single-patient rooms, designed to give privacy, comfort and dignity to all patients on the new unit.
THE IMPACT
The deep floor plan benefits from large feature windows to most bays, providing natural light to assist with patients healing and to maintain their circadian rhythm. Glazed sliding doors to each bed bay and generous staff bases provides good observation for staff.
