THE PROJECT
Broadmoor is one of only 3 High Secure Mental Health Hospitals in the country and this project represented the major rebuild of the 150-Year-old facility to create 16 new wards, and over 234 beds, in modern, safe and therapeutic environments.
OUR APPROACH
Our approach met strict NOMS and NHS High Secure Design Guide standards while overcoming topographical and environmental challenges without disrupting a highly secure Mental Health site. We customised the environments to meet the needs of service users, including innovative bedroom and therapy area designs developed in collaboration with challenging service users. To ensure robustness and precision in the design, we adopted a new construction method, working closely with the Main Contractor and utilising advanced BIM technologies. This involved the use of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), including off-site prefabricated Concrete panels and panelised roofing.
WHAT WE DID
The new development comprises 234 beds spread over 16 wards and split over multiple levels cut into the existing topography. Each accessing their own private garden space, the design utilises natural light, framed views of the surrounding forest and all with maximised sight lines for Service user and staff safety. There is a central building which houses therapy and activity spaces, a chapel, café and cinema, offices, training, and staff welfare. There is a separate horticulture building, Kitchen Garden and sports hub all in landscape grounds designed for health and wellbeing.
THE IMPACT
The new facility has transformed the aging hospital into a safe, progressive, and therapeutic environment caring for the most challenging of Service users and reflective of modern Secure mental Health services. It has become the benchmark for all new High Secure Forensic settings both in the UK and internationally and transformed the standing and profile of the Service. In 2017 the project won two national awards for MMC – including Best Healthcare Project of the year at the prestigious Offsite Awards.
