THE PROJECT
A major extension and internal remodelling of the department at Liverpool Women's Hospital has created one of the largest Neonatal Unit of its kind in the UK. Improvements to the existing facility were essential to respond to demand and ensure the delivery of specialised treatments for the newest tiny arrivals.
OUR APPROACH
The new unit provides improved facilities including new ITU suites, HDU suites and SCBU. It sits alongside existing departments and wards to deliver maximum clinical efficiency and enhance the patient experience.
WHAT WE DID
Built out over an area of soft landscaping and car parking the new extension wraps around the existing façade creating a new identity for the neonatal department. The layout consists of ‘nursery pods’ for both the Neonatal Intensive Care and High Dependency Units, along with additional staff & family support spaces. Clinical areas were carefully designed to deliver high standards of observation, privacy and dignity and to bring natural light into the building.
THE IMPACT
We collaborated with clinicians, families & parents to create a modern & flexible healthcare space that helps optimise the care and treatment of all infants and their families within the Neonatal Unit and related services. It ensures the whole family is included in the care and decision-making process, thereby helping LWH provide family centred care of the highest quality.
