THE PROJECT
Maintaining Alder Hey’s vision to provide the best quality in healthcare and lead in innovation, our proposals include a new surgical neonatal unit offering adjoining parent accommodation and an extension to the existing Emergency Department, providing Emergency Decisions Unit, Paediatric Assessment Unit and Urgent Treatment Centre services.
OUR APPROACH
In response to demand for emergency care services at Alder Hey NHS Foundation Trust increasing significantly over the last ten years, a new Emergency Decisions Unit, Paediatric Assessment Unit and Urgent Treatment Centre is proposed at Ground Floor as an extension to the existing Emergency Department. Located at first floor, the proposed Neonatal unit will provide 22 single cot rooms with integral accommodation for parents, including clinically well, but recently delivered mothers, in a double family room model.
WHAT WE DID
The creation of additional assessment areas at ground floor aims to reduce pressures on the wider department, caring for Emergency Department patients and those referred through other pathways who require observations and tests over a 24-hour stay period before transfer to another ward or discharge home.
At first floor, the neonatal unit is crafted to reduce movement of infants around the unit and facilitate a mixed acuity model of nursing and medical care, each room being suitable for providing all levels of neonatal care including invasive respiratory support and bereavement care.
THE IMPACT
Working with Liverpool Neonatal Partnership and engaging with parents, our proposals have been developed using both the latest neonatal design research and human experiences to create neonatal spaces where parent rooms open directly onto the cot room, allowing parents 24-hour access to their baby.
