THE PROJECT
The client, Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, successfully applied for central funding as part of the NHS’ Eradicating Dormitories initiative to replace the aging and outdated ward areas at the centre. Designed and constructed extensively through the COVID pandemic, the project was delivered in record time and on a constrained live Hospital site.
OUR APPROACH
The project’s design approach drew on our experience, evidence-based innovation, and collaboration. Despite tight timeframes and complex site conditions, the goal was to create patient-focused spaces promoting health and well-being, with a focus on privacy and dignity. The design prioritises security without institutional fences and incorporates garden spaces and city views.
This modern design contrasts with the existing centre, aiming to connect with the local context of Lincoln. We worked with artists and students from Lincoln University to create bespoke murals, inside and out, linking to the area’s narrative and graphics.
WHAT WE DID
The new building features two flexible 18-bed wards for diverse adult service users. These wards have en-suited accommodation and share a central support spine. An innovative Extra Care bed area adapts for general or intensive care, based on evolving patient needs.
The interior design is simple and calming with ample natural light. These wards seamlessly connect to the existing PHC building’s circulation routes, with upgrades to visiting areas. The design emphasises level access and elevated views from bedrooms and living areas.
THE IMPACT
The new wards at the Peter Hodgkinson Centre have completely transformed the user experience for service users, families, and staff, revitalising an aging and unfit facility. The project has also instilled pride and a strong sense of place among the service, evident during site visits.
This project received the prestigious Best Service User Engagement award at the 2023 Design in Mental Health Network Awards. Throughout the proposal and design phases, LPFT and the design team actively involved experts by experience, service users, staff, carers, the Lincolnshire community, and key stakeholders from the health and care system.
