THE PROJECT

The project will address a range of local needs in a joined-up collaborative whole system way across multiple service providers to be located on the site, with a view to delivering unprecedented outcomes, by promoting prevention and wellness, building up the community and developing resilience. It will fully integrate people of all ages and abilities into an open community setting, creating a self-supporting, sustainable neighbourhood connected to the wider community. This innovative project will reduce hospital admissions and support people in getting back to a normal life after hospital discharge. It will facilitate the desire for prevention, personalisation and empowerment. The scheme will support and facilitate patient choice and a holistic approach to care and support, allowing people to continue to live the lifestyle they choose in the same familiar locality thereby promoting the building up of communities.

THE PROJECT
DESIGN APPROACH

Arranged into four blocks the masterplan will provide an 85 Apartment Extra Care, 72 Bed Care Home, Community Hub, Primary Care Centre, Transitional Care Centre and a 100 place Nursery. The buildings vary in height between single and three storeys taking into account the level differences across the site to maximize the accommodation but keep the overall building heights to an absolute minimum.

DESIGN APPROACH
WHAT WE DID

The buildings are designed to be domestic in appearance with familiar materials and subtle detailing. A complementary palette of materials was set out for the site allowing each building to have their identity but to work together to provide a cohesive village feel. The material palette was sensitive to the surrounding buildings and heritage assets on the site and in keeping with the strong tradition of brick making found in Burton upon Trent.
